Wow - this Sci-Screen was a hit, with an absolutely packed house! Thanks again to Dr. Richmond for giving us such an interesting talk on the practicalities of time travel.
Sure to be a blockbuster, X-Men: Days of Future Past is paired with a talk and Q&A with Dr. Alasdair Richmond, who previously regaled us with the best time-travelly, kill-Hitlery stuff which I have yet encountered.
Dr. Richmond is a senior lecturer in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, and a member of Philosophy of Science at Edinburgh University. More about him here.
He's also one interesting fellow, with a penchant for waistcoats and pocket watches.
His talk is titled: "Getting Back at the Past: Time Travel and Changing History."
Abstract: "Lots of time travel stories assume that travelling back in time would let you alter the past, erasing one history and replacing it with another. But is there any scientific basis for such ideas? And if there is, what philosophical problems might they face? Alasdair Richmond introduces the philosophy of time travel and history-changing
with a hint of quantum theory, a dash of many-worlds and a sprinkling of science fiction."
